Seems in both books read so far [Some Experiences of an Irish RM by Somerville and Ross and A Long Way to Go by Marigold Armitage], urban Europeans (English in particular) look down their noses at the Irish way of life, especially their agricultural and animal husbandry talents. Poking fun at them, calling the book humorous, but I didn't find it that way...left me feeling sad for the Irish and the lack of respect for them. From CM:
I first read this book many years ago and I can attest that moments from the book have really stayed with me over the years. (Gillian wants to advise her son to give people what they want rather than what they need -- oh! revelation! Of course, it's a prescription against prescription but there you go.) The characters in the book are well drawn. The descriptions of horses and hunting (and probably the racing) are accurate and evocative. Everyone can agree that the ending is extremely weak. It certainly is a product of its time and parts of it seem quite dated but parts of it are absolutely timeless. That's one of the things that attracts us to hunting and the book captures that beautifully.More?
